Hedge funds reversed course from June's negative returns, with Asia ex-Japan managers leading the way last month, but they are still overshadowed by Japan fund gains for 2013.

Asia ex-Japan hedge funds were the best performers during a month of relatively flat performance, gaining an average 1.93% in July – slightly above the benchmark MSCI Asia ex-Japan Index which was up 1.84%, according to Eurekahedge. However, the standouts in the region were Japan managers, which were up 18.4% in the first seven months of the year, buoyed by Abenomics-fuelled market liquidity.
