UBS Warburg poaches China star from Goldman

Goldman Sachs greater China economist joins UBSW as its chief economist.

In the midst of some of the poorest markets anyone can remember, Asia's top-rated research house, UBS Warburg has poached one of Goldman Sachs most highly regarded analysts.

UBSW has hired Jonathan Anderson, Goldman's senior Greater China economist, who will be promoted to the role of chief economist.

Anderson is a highly regarded economist with a flair for writing and presenting. He came to prominence recently with a series of research notes entitled "Five Myths About China," which sought to debunk some of the conventional wisdom being trotted out about China. The papers - which were co-authored by Fred Hu - proved so popular among Mainland Chinese media that they have been turned into a book.

He also pioneered a new methodology for assessing China's GDP growth rate.

At UBSW his brief will be regional, as opposed to just Greater China. He will also be promoted to a managing director. He was an executive director at Goldman, which he joined a year and a half ago. Prior to Goldman he was the IMF's resident representative for China (a role which he also had in Russia). He was additionally a teaching fellow at the People's University of China in Beijing.

Aside from his accomplishments as an economist, he is a mean harmonica player, and is fluent in Russian and Mandarin. His arrival at UBSW looks likely to further boost the firm's research franchise.
