JSM adds to funds practice

The largest law firm in Hong Kong has appointed a new head of funds practice.

Johnson Stokes & Master has announced the appointment of Phillip Smith as the head of its Funds Practice. He will be responsible primarily for Hong Kong and China.

Phillip Smith has been a partner in JSM's Financial Services Group for a number of years, with experience of distressed debt funds, guaranteed funds, hedge funds, smoothed growth funds and exchange traded funds. He knows the region's financial markets well, having been in Hong Kong since 1988.

"I am delighted to take on this new role at what is a very exciting time in the funds sector with the expanding range of products being authorised for retail distribution in Hong Kong and with the ever increasing volume of funds work emanating from mainland China," says Smith.

Duncan Abate, partner and head of JSM's Financial Services Group says, "We are delighted that Phillip has taken on this important role as head of Funds Practice.  Phillip has extensive experience and skill in the development of all types of financial products and in dealing with Hong Kong regulators. Under his leadership, the funds team will continue to provide clients with high level of service."

Smith says he will be seeking to add to JSM's market share with REITs being a particular area of focus given the firms strong property developer client base.

Smith's appointment was effective on July 1.
