Around 165 delegates descended on the Westin Taipei Hotel for AsianInvestor's 6th annual Taiwan Institutional Investment Forum.
Held on March 15, the event is designed to highlight how institutional investors are responding to the latest market developments around Asia and the world. This event was supported by MFS Investment Management, JP Morgan and CreditSights.
The day's programme started with an opening keynote address on foreign exchange, interest rates and Taiwan's investment climate by Professor Jeff Chien-Fu Lin of the National Policy Foundation.
Rob Almeida, institutional portfolio manager for MFS Investment Management, gave a presentation on equity investing in a slow-growth environment; while O'delle Burke of JP Morgan Worldwide Securities Services offered his thoughts on collateral management.
Bloomberg's senior economist Michael McDonough offered a 2012 global outlook on China, the US and the EU, and Ronald A Edwards of Tamkang University spoke about China opportunities and challenges for Taiwanese institutional investors.
A panel on ETFs, asset allocation and liquidity followed featuring Marco Montanari of Deutsche Bank, Sandra Lee of BlackRock and Ken Wong of State Street Global Advisors.
The afternoon session continued with three more panel discussions. Overcoming risk and volatility via fixed income was the topic debated by Stefan Kräuchi of ILS Advisers, Patrick Liao of Polaris International Securities and Vincent Yi-Hsin Wu, of Fhu Hwa Securities.
Where opportunities lie in emerging markets was the focus for Jack Wang of Chinatrust and Lucas Wang of WIHarper Group.
And reducing overall investment risk through alternative investments was discussed by Aaron Chan of Asia Pacific Land, Joseph Chang of SCM Strategic Capital, Christopher Hunter of Cambridge Associates and Allen Sing of SAIL Flagship.
The event concluded with a presentation by Abhi Shroff of Greenwich Associates on global investment opportunities for institutional investors.
