The Conrad in Hong Kong played host to our inaugural event

Around 200 delegates headed to The Conrad hotel in Hong Kong for AsianInvestor's and FinanceAsia's inaugural Asian Commodities Investment Summit last week.

The event took place over November 1-2 and featured seven panel discussions and five plenary addresses. The summit was sponsored by G-Resources, Threadneedle Investments and Dow Jones Indexes.

The first day saw an opening speech from Kenneth Courtis, co-founder of Themes Investment Management, on perhaps the key commodities question: a bubble or a new, long-term trend?

Panellists then debated the role of commodities in a balanced portfolio, followed by an address on China's commodities needs (see today's story). Risks and opportunities also featured strongly on the first day, along with a discussion on gold and precious metals.

Day 2 opened with an address from Randolph Koppa, president of the Trade and Development Bank of Mongolia. The subsequent debates focused on oil and energy, energy futures, base metals and Western debt as well as institutional routes into commodities.
