Singapore law firm creates retail funds role

Tan Peng Chin law firm appoints Susan Tang to the new role of head of retail funds, in response to growing demand from clients expanding their focus on mass-market investment products.
Tan Peng Chin LLC has named Susan Tang, a director at the law firm, as head of retail funds practice for its asset and wealth management department.

In her new role, Tang will be the main contact person for local and offshore fund managers who have legal or regulatory queries on the offer of retail products in Singapore. As a director, she will continue to assist clients in all other areas covered by the asset and wealth management department.

TangÆs appointment is ôtimely as the market matures and products previously available exclusively to high-net-worth investors are brought into the retail arenaö, says Melvin Khoo, head of the firmÆs asset and wealth management department.

Khoo notes that Tang is the firmÆs most senior lawyer in this area of practice, who has in-house experience with a fund management company. ôThis is a great combination for our clients,ö he says.

Tang was admitted to the Singapore bar in 1994 and began her career practising civil litigation, where she dealt with various issues including trade and commerce, corporate secretarial, banking, employment, property, estate and trusts. She then switched over to the field of banking and financial services, specialising in the area of asset and wealth management in 2003, when she was appointed legal counsel for Deutsche Asset Management for the Asia ex-Japan region.

Tang has extensive experience advising fund managers, trustees and financial advisers in the establishment and management of collective investment schemes, including offshore funds, for offer to the retail public, including under the Central Provident Fund Investment Scheme.

Her experience also covers operational and business issues, having worked closely with management and product development, operations, marketing, investments and tax groups on the structuring of products for launch in various jurisdictions. She has dealt with compliance issues, implementation of global policies and procedures, staff training and customer complaints and audits. Structural issues such as joint ventures and business partnerships in the region have also been within her coverage, in addition to the day-to-day legal documentation and oversight of legal and reputation risks.

Tan Peng ChinÆs asset and wealth management department has six lawyers. Its services cover private funds, offshore structures, insurance-linked products, property and business trusts, regulatory and licensing issues, tax incentives, and general compliance matters.

Founded in 1994, Tan Peng Chin is a full-service Singapore law firm with around 40 lawyers.
