Milbank brings on Bauerschmidt

Joe Bauerschmidt comes across to the international firm from Simpson Thacher to bolster its Asian capital markets practice.

Joe Bauerschmidt has arrived at the Hong Kong office of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy as counsel in a move described by the international firm as strengthening its Asian capital markets practice. Gaining the US-trained lawyer's services from February 15, Milbank picks up a seasoned veteran with over seven years of Asian capital markets experience and a total of 13 years of global experience, including participation on more than 50 SEC registered deals.

Upon joining the firm, Bauerschmidt reports to Anthony Root, managing partner of Milbank's Hong Kong office and head of the firm's corporate practice in Asia and enters a practice that boasts approximately 35 attorneys resident in its Asian offices.

Bauerschmidt crosses from Simpson Thacher, where he led its efforts on numerous high-profile transactions around the region including Siam Commercial Bank's recapitalisations in 1999 and deals for OCBC Bank (2001), Fubon Financial (2002) and Krung Thai Bank (2003). While a member of the Simpson Thacher practice, Bauerschmidt was based in its Singapore and Hong Kong offices.

His experience also extends beyond the financial institutions and investment bank sector to representing numerous companies in the oil and gas, power and technology-related space. Bauerschmidt began his legal career with Cravath Swaine & Moore in New York, where he focused on capital markets, M&A and syndicated corporate finance after starting out as an engineer with Schlumberger in North America and Europe.

"This is a significant opportunity for us to grow our capital markets practice with a highly-respected lawyer," says Root. "With a solid Wall Street foundation, Joe has broadened his expertise with more than seven years of Asian capital markets experience. We are delighted to have him."

Bauerschmidt's appointment follows a busy year for Milbank, which was involved in a slew of high-profile deals including the Starhub IPO, the TOM Online IPO and last year's project financing for PearlOil.
