Manulife Asset Management Taiwan names equities head

Joining from Fidelity, Lui Yili will head the fund house's equities coverage.

Manulife Asset Management Taiwan has named Liu Yili as head of equities. In this role, Liu will be based in Taipei, overseeing a team of five equity portfolio professionals with a combined total of NT$2.18 billion in assets under management.

In her new role, Liu will also be regional head of technology research for MFC Global Investment Management (Asia).

Liu reports to Matthew Lee, head of Greater China equities in Hong Kong, feeding into MFC Global Investment Management's Greater China investment strategy. She will also report to Andrew Wang, CIO of Manulife Asset Management Taiwan and responsible for the territory's equity portfolios.

Liu joins Manulife Asset Management Taiwan, an MFC Global Investment Management company, with 10 years of experience in the finance industry covering Taiwan and in particular, the island's technology sector. Prior to her new role, she oversaw technology sector research and fund management for Fidelity Investments in Hong Kong. Before joining Fidelity, Liu was an investment manager at a venture capital fund based in Taiwan.

"Liu brings a unique understanding of capital allocation decisions in emerging markets as well as being widely recognised for her expertise in the technology sector," Wang says. "Her knowledge and experience will be a valuable addition to the existing team in Taiwan."

Tahnoon Pasha, Hong Kong-based head of investments for equities at MFC Global Investment Management (Asia), says Liu's appointment underpins the company's conviction in the investment opportunities that exist in Taiwanese equities and she will feed important local market insight into our global Greater China investment strategies.

Liu's appointment is another in a series of important hires that MFC Global Investment Management has made in 2009 as it continues to expand into the institutional market in Asia. The company announced the hiring of Morten Frederiksen and Colin Ng to its Hong Kong-based Asia-Pacific equities desk earlier in the year as well as significant hires in its local institutional sales teams and fund management teams around the Asia region.
