The index provider is finally settling with the Shanghai Stock Exchange over an infringement lawsuit dating back to 2006. Malaysia becomes a candidate for potential upgrade in FTSE Group’s Global Equity Index Series, while China A-shares and Taiwan miss out on promotion this year. South Korea is classified as a developed market. Red-chips will move from Hong Kong to China. Taiwan will stay an emerging market. China A-shares remain on a watch list. The agreement marks FTSE's full entry into the India market. For MCX-SX, it will make the exchange accessible to international investors. The new index combines FTSE's approach to indexing with Value Partners' value-based investing. FTSE and the Stock Exchange of Thailand add the FTSE SET Shariah Index to the market’s benchmarks. The index series is aimed at boosting Malaysia's standing as a key commodity centre. The 18 tradable indices will be useful to providers of structured products, index funds and ETFs. Asia-Pacific managing director Paul Hoff is lobbying for a Ucits-type platform within the region. The index series can be used by even the most conservative Shariah-compliant investors since it makes use of asset-based debt screening. The Singapore benchmark index will be leaner with 30 stocks compared with the current 48. The index goes live in January, but trial values are already available. FTSE CEO Mark Makepeace expects South Korea to clear a foreign exchange hurdle and become eligible to investors as a developed market next year.
