Vanguard names Asia head of investment solutions

Scott Lawrence will work with the companyÆs nine-person Asia-based sales team from Vanguard's office in Singapore.
Vanguard Investments Australia has named Scott Lawrence in a new role as head of investment solutions for Asia-Pacific that reflects the companyÆs expectations of strong growth in the institutional market in the region.

Vanguard previously provided investment solutions to the Asian institutional market from its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Melbourne, with the responsibilities then shared by CIO Eric Smith and the rest of the investment management team. Vanguard has gained a reputation as a specialist indexer, managing more than A$72 billion ($66 billion) in index funds for both institutional and retail investors.

In his former Melbourne-based role as head of investment solutions and research, Lawrence was responsible for developing investment solutions for Australian institutional clients.

In his new role, Lawrence will make use of his investment experience to work with institutional clients in Asia and develop investment solutions for them. Based in Singapore, he will work with the companyÆs nine-person Asia-based sales team.

Vanguard opened its Singapore office in April 2003. Vanguard Investments Singapore, a subsidiary of the Vanguard Group, operates as an exempt financial adviser and exempt fund manager in Singapore. It serves leading financial institutions in Asia, these include pension funds, governments and companies, managing more than $20 billion in assets from clients in the region.

The appointment is in response to the opportunities Vanguard has identified throughout the Asia-Pacific.

Lawrence joined Vanguard in 2002 and has over 20 years of experience in the funds management industry. His previous roles at Vanguard include senior investment specialist and head of institutional sales and client relationship management. Most recently, he managed Vanguard's rebalancing and asset allocation service and coordinated VanguardÆs investment research activities.

Vanguard Investments Australia is a wholly owned subsidiary of US-based Vanguard Group, which manages over $1.3 trillion in assets for more than 22 million individual and institutional accounts as of January 2008.

In Asia, Vanguard serves its institutional clients from its office in Singapore.
